Who needs sedation dentistry?
Dental fear stems from several sources. It could be a past traumatic experience, generalized dental anxiety, or aversion to dental smells and sounds. Whatever the source, dental anxiety can prevent you from getting the much-needed dental care.
If the thought of a dental visit fills you with dread, it’s time to visit a sedation dentist. Sedation dentistry calms frazzled nerves and makes dental procedures fly by seamlessly. Painless dentistry ensures you get the necessary dental care to maintain optimal oral health.
Sedation dentistry is also excellent for patients with a sensitive gag reflex, low pain threshold, or inability to numb with anesthetics. Complex or lengthy procedures may also require sedation dentistry for a more comfortable experience.
What are the sedation dentistry options available?
We provide several sedation options to suit your unique needs. After consultation, we’ll determine the best choice for you.
Available options include:
- Oral conscious sedation: It involves taking a simple pill at a directed time before your procedure. This sedation doesn’t “knock you out” but provides deep relaxation. Sometimes, you may doze off, but a slight nudge is enough to awaken you. Although you remain awake, you’ll remember little about your procedure. This retrograde amnesia means you’ll forget sights, smells, noises, and other triggering sensations. Since it involves taking a prescribed medication, it takes time for the effects to wear off. Ensure you have someone to escort you to and from the office.
- IV sedation: It provides a deeper level of sedation than oral sedation. The sedative medication is delivered directly into the bloodstream through an IV line in the arm. The effects kick in within minutes, and we will keep adjusting the levels to meet your needs. IV sedation provides several levels of relaxation, from mild to moderate sedation. Depending on the level, you’ll remain conscious and able to respond to verbal cues. However, you may feel drowsy or like you’re in a dreamlike state. Like oral conscious sedation, ensure you have someone escort you home. Plus, take the rest of the day off and avoid alcohol or driving for the next 24 hours.
Sedation dentistry is safe, but it’s essential to have a thorough consultation with a qualified doctor. Dr. Kay will review your medical history, current medications, and past reactions to sedation to determine your suitability. We also continuously monitor vital signs during treatment and are prepared to handle any complications, although they are very rare.
